Runner's Word: Ask the Expert!

Last year Pam was featured in Runner's Word: Ask the Expert! The question she answered was "What's a good overall exercise for runner's to use that incorporates all upper body muscles?". A great question and we wanted to share the answer again with you! See Pam's answer below....

Question:

What's a good overall exercise for runner's to use that incorporates all upper body muscles?

Answer:

My motto is to work smarter not longer. Start with a light dumbbell (6 – 10 pounds.)  Begin the sequence with an overhead press then bring the arms down to execute a reverse fly. Drop to full push-up position or modified knee positon to execute a push-up. Repeat the above sequence for 4-6 reps to begin and up to 15 - 20 reps as your strength increases. Place emphasis on proper execution rather than speed.  In one small move, you can effectively work your biceps, triceps, medial and rear deltoids, pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi as well as your entire core!
