Top Five Misguided Fitness Comments (Let's Clear up Some Things Here...)

Over the years, I have heard a lot of comments from clients: some good, some bad and some just downright off track. Since I figure that you are coming to Body by Pam for a reason, plunking your hard earned money down and wanting results (or reading this blog without undue duress), let’s clear up a few thoughts that may be leading you astray. Have you said any of the following before?

#5: As soon as life settles down, I’m going to pay attention to my health. I’m just too busy to….

Insert any of the following: visit the chiropractor, get a massage, meditate, get a checkup/physical, eat healthy, give up sugar, cut down on alcohol. Let’s face it: when will life NOT be so busy? And don’t tell me it’s when you retire because retired people are some of the BUSIEST people I know. Or perhaps you want to wait until you are sick? Life is like a roller coaster – it’s guaranteed to go up and down. So hop on, hang on and take control of your health once and for all.

#4: I just heard about a new cleanse, detox, diet pill, scheme on FACEBOOK that is guaranteed to make me lose weight quickly and give me a jump start!

This idea may seem like a good one but it seldom works. The phrase “jump start” connotes a quick fix approach. We all want to believe the quick fixes. I will never be rich because these quick fixes are what make money, not long term solutions. So stop kidding yourself and pick a lifestyle eating pattern that makes sense – and stick to it through “thick and thin.” If you need suggestions, visit http://www.bodbypam.com and click on the “Our Services” tab.

#3: I don’t have to keep track of my food – it’s too hard and I don’t have time. Besides, I generally know what I’m eating!

You have absolutely no idea what you ate five hours ago let alone a whole day ago. Try it if you don’t believe me. I guarantee you that you will miss something. This is why programs like Weight Watchers work – if you actually track the food. Do yourself a favor and actually try a program that tracks your food – you will not be sorry!

#2: When I was younger, I used to be able to….

Insert any of the following: eat whatever I want and not gain weight, not work out, and bench press 1,500 lbs.…. You must get over this thinking now. You have a different body and you’re older. You can only deal with what is happening presently. Embrace the wonderful you that is here and ready to LIVE!

#1: I don’t understand why I am losing weight so slowly. I only lost five pounds this week!

This one requires a multi-level answer:

  1. The weight DID not come on that quickly. Really it didn’t! Consider this tidbit: The average American will gain about one pound of additional weight each year from age 25, or 35 additional pounds by the age of 60. If are losing a pound a week, which is Weight Watchers’ general rule, then you are losing WAY faster than you are gaining.
  2. Weight loss requires patience – you don’t want to gain it back
  3. Please stop complaining – it really doesn’t help.
  4. Work hard and you will achieve results.
  5. Listen to your trainer or whatever fitness professional is helping you – we really do care

So….are you guilty of any of these misconceptions? It’s never too late to change! Share this blog with someone who may need an intervention – or maybe just use it for some thoughtful introspection. Go out there and take charge of your health!  Your comments are welcome.
